Operator Messages Manual

Chapter 39 FCS Monitor Messages

The messages in this chapter are generated by the FCS Monitor subsystem. The subsystem ID displayed by these messages includes FCSM as the subsystem name.

NOTE: Negative-numbered messages are common to most subsystems. If you receive a negative-numbered message, see Chapter 15. For a discussion of compressed element identifiers for disk drive enclosures, see “Compressed Identifiers for Disk Drive Enclosure Elements”.Of the two FCSA adapters that connect a server to a disk drive enclosure chain, the canonical adapter is the adapter with the smaller group, or module, or slot, or SAC, taken in that order, The canonical adapter group, module identify a disk drive enclosure and its elements. See “Canonical Naming Convention”.

Canonical Naming Convention

A disk drive enclosure is normally connected by two Fibre Channel cables to two different FCSA adapters. These adapters can be located in two different IOAM modules or enclosures. The FCS monitor process identifies disk drive enclosures and their elements through their group, module and slot designations, which are numbers derived from the I/O Path. Because the FCS monitor process recognizes each element through two different adapters, each element could seem to have two different identities.

To avoid this situation, the FCS monitor process identifying a disk drive enclosure and its elements by recognizing only that fibre channel cable whose I/O path values are smaller; that is, the identity of the disk drive enclosure and its elements is based on the cable that has the smaller group number, or the smaller module number, or the smaller slot number, or the smaller SAC number, in that order. HP refers to this I/O path as the “canonical path” and to its constituent group, module, and slot numbers as “canonical.”

Compressed Identifiers for Disk Drive Enclosure Elements

The FCS Monitor process uses a compression algorithm to identify elements of a disk drive enclosure containing M2801 fibre channel disks. The FCS Monitor process converts the six number I/O path (group, module, slot, SAC, shelf, and bay) to a three-number designation.

The algorithm is:

Table 39-1 Compression Algorithm for Disk Drive Enclosure Element Identification

Segment of I/O PathDisk Drive Enclosure Element Identifier
groupgroup
module = 2 or 3(module * 100) + (slot * 10) + SAC Number
slot= 1 through 5(100 * shelf) + Bay Number
sac = 1 or 2
shelf = 1 through 4 if daisy-chained; 1 if a single disk drive enclosure
bay = 0 through 99

This is an example three-number designation:
