Operator Messages Manual

Chapter 37 FASTPTCP Messages

The messages in this chapter are generated by the FASTPTCP subsystem. FASTPTCP generates tokenized EMS messages on the $0 collector. These messages cannot be redirected to another EMS collector. FASTPTCP messages are identified by the owner/subsystem names: TANDEM.FASTPTCP. The SSID number is 240 and the three-letter management code is FSP. The ZSPIDEF file defining FASTPTCP events is named ZFSDDL.

NOTE: Negative-numbered messages are common to most subsystems. If you receive a negative-numbered message, see Chapter 15.

proc-name DEV: device-name FASTCNFG error in: cnfg-file Param: param-name

proc-name

is the process name of the FASTPTCP process.

device-name

is the Spooler device name.

cnfg-file

is the name of the FASTCNFG or FASTKCON file.

param-name

is the parameter name from the FASTCNFG entry.

There might be two causes for this message. The first cause is:

Cause  The value specified for the parameter in the FASTCNFG entry is syntactically incorrect or specifies an invalid value.

Effect  The default value for the parameter is used. In some cases, this action might prevent printing. In other cases, the job might be printed incorrectly.

Recovery  Correct the FASTCNFG or FASTKCON entry, and either restart the Spooler device or send a new print job.

The second cause is:

Cause  No entry exists for the specified device in FASTCNFG or FASTKCON. The absence of the device entry is first noticed when the FASTPTCP process looks up the first parameter for the device. Instead of a message specifically indicating that the device is not found, this message indicates an error occurred in the specified param-name. For FASTPTCP, the parameter is typically reported as ADDRESS. FASTPTCP also displays the related message:

DEV: device-name not defined in FASTKCON/FASTCNFG

Effect  No printing occurs, the Spooler job is requeued, and the Spooler device is placed offline.

Recovery  Add the device record to FASTCNFG. If necessary, run FASTKCUT to generate the FASTKCON file, and restart the Spooler device. (Depending on the device configuration, the device might restart automatically.) Configuring and starting a FASTPTCP process are described in the Spooler FASTP Network Print Processes Manual.

61

proc-name DEV: device-name not defined in FASTKCON/FASTCNFG

proc-name

is the process name of the FASTPTCP process.

device-name

is the Spooler device name.

Cause  The FASTPTCP process could not find a device record for the specified device in a FASTKCON or FASTCNFG file. This message is accompanied by the message:

proc-name DEV: device-name FASTCNFG error in cnfg-file Param: ADDRESS

Effect  No printing occurs, the Spooler job is requeued, and the Spooler device is placed offline.

Recovery  Add the device record to FASTCNFG. If necessary, run FASTKCUT to generate the FASTKCON file, and restart the Spooler device. (Depending on the device configuration, the device might restart automatically.) Configuring and starting a FASTPTCP process are described in the Spooler FASTP Network Print Processes Manual.

62

proc-name DEV: device-name FASTKCON/FASTCNFG has changed, resetting device

proc-name

is the process name of the FASTPTCP process.

device-name

is the Spooler device name.

Cause  FASTCNFG or FASTKCON was changed while a FASTPTCP process was active, and the print process had already printed one or more jobs for the device and had started another print job.

Effect  No printing occurs, the Spooler job is requeued, and the Spooler device is placed offline with error 66.

Recovery  Restart the Spooler device. (Depending on the device configuration, the device might restart automatically.)

69

proc-name DEV: device-name Invalid Do Timing Mark reply: hex-data

proc-name

is the process name of the FASTPTCP process.

device-name

is the Spooler device name.

hex-data

is a hexadecimal display of some of the data received from the printer.

Cause  The FASTPTCP process has been configured with PROTOCOL=TCP/IP-TELNET and NOTIMINGMARK=NO and expects a certain response from the remote TELNET server (AWAN, terminal server, or other device) at the end of the print job. Data was received other than a normal Do Timing Mark response. One common cause is a printer that is sending XON or XOFF characters when the AWAN or terminal server port is not configured for XON-XOFF. (Some printers send these characters regardless of the setting of flow control as XON-XOFF, CTS, or disabled.) XON and XOFF characters are displayed as hex 11 and 13.

Effect  The print job is not closed in the Spooler, even though the job usually has been completely printed. The device will be stuck on this print job, preventing other jobs from printing.

Recovery  If the job has completely printed, delete the job from the Spooler. If only XON-XOFF characters are displayed in hex-data, reconfigure the AWAN or terminal server port to use XON-XOFF, reconfigure the printer to suppress the XON-XOFF (if possible), or disconnect the AWAN or terminal server RECEIVE DATA wire to disable input from the printer. As a last resort, use NOTIMINGMARK=YES, but verify that no data is lost, especially at the end of print jobs.

70

proc-name DEV: device-name LPD Msg: lpd-message

proc-name

is the process name of the FASTPTCP process.

device-name

is the Spooler device name.

lpd-message

is a text message from the remote Line Printer Daemon.

Cause  This message always occurs together with another LPD error message. During the processing of the other error, the remote Line Printer Daemon sometimes also sends this message back to the FASTPTCP process.

Effect  See the description of the other LPD message that appears with this message.

Recovery  See the description of the other LPD message that appears with this message.

71

proc-name DEV: device-name SNMP Printer Status = printer-status

proc-name

is the process name of the FASTPTCP process.

device-name

is the Spooler device name.

printer-status

is the printer status text returned by the HP JetDirect printer.

Cause  This message applies to HP JetDirect printers only. The SMNP Get-Response returned the status text specified for printer-status and the FASTPTCP process does not recognize this status. The FASTPTCP process has an internal list of the exact text returned from the printer. As HP or third-party emulators release new printers, network cards, or firmware updates, sometimes a new status message is added or the text of an existing message is slightly altered.

Effect  Because the FASTPTCP process retries the poll operation to retrieve the SNMP status, a later poll might return a status code recognized by the FASTPTCP process, and normal operation continues. If a valid status is not received after repeated retries, then one of the following effects can occur:

  • The Spooler print job can be requeued, and the Spooler device placed offline. This action can result in the same job being reprinted one or more times.

  • The end of the print job could be truncated.

  • The print job might be terminated before any printing occurs. In this case, the Spooler print job would be requeued, and the Spooler device placed offline.

Recovery  Consider using FASTCNFG POLLTYPE and DEVICE POLLTYPE to explicitly handle this printer status text. If no other problems occur, the problem can be ignored. If the problems (jobs printing more than once, jobs not printing to completion, or jobs not printing at all) persist consider configuring the printer using the LPD protocol (PROTOCOL=LPD1179) instead or contact your service provider. Configuring and troubleshooting a FASTPTCP process are described in the Spooler FASTP Network Print Processes Manual.
