Chapter 7 BRU (Backup and Restore 2.0) Messages

The messages in this chapter are generated by the Backup and Restore 2.0 subsystem. The subsystem ID displayed by these messages includes BRU as the subsystem name. When the message is displayed on your terminal, it is preceded by either Error, Info, or Warning.

NOTE: Negative-numbered messages are common to most subsystems. If you receive a negative-numbered message that is not described in this chapter, see Chapter 15.


5000

Error 5000 Job ID: job-id Process Name: process-name Component: component The DMA, process-name, failed to start the job. Return code: rc File: file-name Line: line-num

job-id

is a valid, unique job identifier with a maximum of eight characters. job-id is not case-sensitive.

process-name

is the process name for the data management application (DMA) process.

component

is the data management application (DMA) component of Backup and Restore 2.0.

rc

is the return code.

file-name

is the name of the Backup and Restore 2.0 source file.

line-num

is the line number within the source file where the error occurred.

Cause  A serious configuration problem occurred. Either a transient resource shortage occurred or a more permanent problem exists.

Effect  The job terminates. After the DMA process issues this message, the DMA terminates because an aspect of job initialization failed. This message might also be accompanied by one or more 5002 messages, typically when the DMA attempts to start a Tape Service or Data Service and an aspect of the services’ initialization fails.

Recovery  Perform these steps:

  1. Determine the reason for failure. For example, sufficient virtual memory might not be available in a given processor for segment allocation in a starting process, or parsing the BRCMD file was not successful.

  2. Make any necessary changes. Correct the configuration problem.

  3. Try the BACKUP or RESTORE command again.

  4. If the Backup or Restore job fails again, gather all relevant EMS logs and SaveAbend files and contact your service provider.



5001

is the process name for the component of Backup and Restore 2.0.

is the data management application (DMA), Data Service, or Tape Service component of Backup and Restore 2.0.

is the name of the Backup and Restore 2.0 source file.

is the line number within the source file where the error occurred.

Cause  A job aborted without completing all assigned work and is nonresumable. You might have specified a tape device name that does not exist.

Effect  The job terminates.

Recovery  Check the Event Management Service (EMS) logs. This message is usually accompanied by other event messages. Perform these steps:

  1. Determine the reason for failure.

  2. Make any necessary changes.

  3. Try the BACKUP or RESTORE command again.

  4. If the Backup or Restore job fails again, gather all relevant EMS logs and SaveAbend files and contact your service provider.

Error 5004 - Job ID: job-id Process Name: process-name Component: component The component is aborting due to internal failure or resource shortage. File: file-name. Line: line-num.

is a valid, unique job identifier with a maximum of eight characters. job-id is not case-sensitive.

process-name

is the process name for the component of Backup and Restore 2.0.

component

is the data management application (DMA), Data Service, or Tape Service component of Backup and Restore 2.0.

file-name

is the name of the Backup and Restore 2.0 source file.

line-num

is the line number within the source file where the error occurred.

Cause  The DMA, Tape Service, or Data Service is aborting because of either a transient resource shortages or a permanent internal failure.

Effect  The job terminates.

Recovery  Perform these steps:

  1. Check the Event Management Service (EMS) logs. This message is usually accompanied by other event messages inserted in the EMS log.

  2. Determine the reason for failure. This event indicates a serious problem.

  3. Make any necessary changes.

  4. Try the BACKUP or RESTORE command again.

  5. If the Backup or Restore job fails again, gather all relevant EMS logs and SaveAbend files and contact your service provider.



5005

is the name of the Backup and Restore command stream (BRCMD) file.

parser-error

is the error received while the DMA is parsing the BRCMD file.

is the name of the Backup and Restore 2.0 source file.

is the line number within the source file where the error occurred.

Cause  The data management application (DMA) received an error while parsing the Backup and Restore command stream (BRCMD) file. Typically, either a shortage of resources exists, or the BRCMD file has been corrupted or modified.

Effect  The job terminates.

Recovery  Issue the command again from BRCOM. If the error persists, gather all relevant Event Management Service (EMS) logs and SaveAbend files and contact your service provider.



5006

Cause  A file-system error was returned in response to a file-system procedure call (for example, open, read, write).

Effect  The job terminates.

Recovery  Fix the problem and try the BACKUP or RESTORE command again. .

is the state of the Backup or Restore job.

is the Network Data Management Protocol message.

is the name of the Backup and Restore 2.0 source file.

is the line number within the source file where the error occurred.

Cause  A component sent another component an invalid message for the latter's current state.

Effect  The job terminates.

Recovery  Determine the reason for failure, make any necessary changes, and try the BACKUP or RESTORE command again. If the Backup or Restore job fails again, gather all relevant Event Management Service (EMS) logs and SaveAbend files and contact your service provider.

Cause  An error was encountered while encoding or decoding an NDMP message.

Effect  The job terminates.

Recovery  Try the BACKUP or RESTORE command again. If the Backup or Restore job fails again, gather all relevant Event Management Service (EMS) logs and SaveAbend files and contact your service provider.

Cause  Tape verification failed. There might be a problem with the tape cartridge, or the tape drive might need to be cleaned.

Effect  The tape might be unusable.

Recovery  Try a different tape cartridge. If the problem continues, clean the tape drive and then try the BACKUP or RESTORE command again.

is a DEFINE name of CLASS TAPE or CLASS TAPECATALOG. This DEFINE sends a request to the labeled-tape server process ($ZSVR) for labeled-tape processing.

is the text of the error.

Cause  The DEFINE specifies a label type other than Backup or Omitted.

Effect  The job terminates.

Recovery  Change the DEFINE label specification to Backup or Omitted and try the BACKUP or RESTORE command again.

Effect  The changes are not made to the tape or disk media. The object you specified is not backed up or restored.

is the name of the magnetic tape unit, such as $TAPE1.

Cause  A tape drive is unavailable or offline, or a tape is not mounted in the tape drive. Backup and Restore 2.0 polls until it finds that the problem has been corrected.

Effect  The job cannot proceed until the problem is fixed.

Recovery  Make the tape drive available, put it online, or mount a tape, whichever is appropriate to fix the problem.



5030

Error 5030 - Job ID: job-id Process Name: process-name Component: component The tape volume on device is write protected.
