Using the hp photosmart 1200 photo scanner on a Macintosh
How to scan photos to a Macintosh
Use these instructions if you have the hp Photo and Imaging Software installed on the computer. If you do not have the software installed, see the section on using other software. Refer to chapter 2 of the user's manual for instructions on setting up the scanner as battery-powered.
Without being connected to a computer, scan photos and store them on the memory card using the following instructions.
- Turn the scanner on. Note that the memory card should be inserted before turning on the scanner.
- Place the photo face down on the scanner glass and close the lid. If you want to change resolution or other options, see the section on how to set the scan options.
- Press the Scan button on the front of the scanner. The indicator light will blink on the scanner until the scan is complete.
Caution! Do not remove the memory card until the light stops blinking. Doing so may cause loss of scanned images. The Photos Remaining indicator will decrease. You can continue scanning photos until you have filled the memory card.
Setting the scan options
- The quality level button changes the resolution of the scan. 1-star is 300dpi, 2-star is 600dpi, and 3-star is 1200dpi. There is virtually no distinguishable difference between the different resolutions for reprints on desktop photo printers of up to 20x30cm (or 8x10in.). To get high speed and good file sizes, you can nearly always use the 1-star setting.
- Higher resolutions are useful for making enlargements and for zooming/cropping into a small area of the picture.
- Use 1-star for making enlargements up to 100% (20x30cm or 8x10in.)
- Use 2-star for making enlargements of 200%
- Use 3-star for making enlargements greater than 300% (30x45cm)
Unloading images to a Macintosh
Use these instructions if you have the hp Photo and Imaging Software installed on the computer. If you do not have the software installed, see the section on using other software.
Note: By default, images remain on the memory card when you unload. For instructions on how to change the image unload options, see the section in the software's on-line help on how to set the image unload options.
- If the scanner is not already connected to the computer, attach the scanner to the computer using the USB cable.
- Turn the scanner on.
- The hp Image Unload dialog will automatically appear on the computer (by default). Follow the on-screen instructions to unload the images. The hp Image Unload software saves the images to the hard disk, then allows you to browse the images.
If you choose to browse, the image will appear in the hp Photo and Imaging Gallery. If hp Image Unload is not set up to automatically delete images, you need to delete the images from the memory card. See the section on deleting images from the memory card.
Deleting images from the memory card
There are two ways to delete images from the memory card or internal memory:
- Set options in hp Image Unload to automatically delete images (recommended).
- Use the computer's file management tool to remove files. On the Macintosh, double-click on the HP_PS1200 volume and drag the image to the trash.
Using other software
You do not need to use the hp Photo & Imaging Gallery to access your images. For example, if you scanned a photo at a friend's house, and want to use the friend's computer to send the image in e-mail, you can do so. You can import, view, or share images from any software that can open JPEG or TIF files.
- Connect the scanner to the computer using a USB cable.
- Turn the scanner on. The HP_PS1200 volume will mount on the desktop.
- Access the images in the same way you would access files on a disk drive.
To disconnect the scanner from a Macintosh
- Unmount/eject the scanner by dragging the HP_PS1200 volume from the desktop to the trash.
- Unplug the USB cable from the scanner.
Note: You should always disconnect the scanner when not in use.
