INTRODUCTION ***************** OPERATING SYSTEMS This Readme file provides specific installation instructions and other information for the HP Color LaserJet 2500 series printers. Installation instructions are provided for the following operating systems: - Windows 2000 - Windows NT 4.0 - Windows 95/98/Me - Macintosh - UNIX - OS/2 For additional information on the printer features and driver features, refer to the online Help included with each software component and the printer online user guide. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS - Windows 95: (Print driver only) Pentium® 90 MHz with 16 MB RAM - Windows 98, Me, 2000, NT 4.0: Pentium® 166 MHz with 32 MB RAM - Windows XP: 233 MHz with 64 MB RAM - Macintosh operating system 8.6 and higher - 150 MB free hard disk space - CD-ROM drive - USB 1.1 port or dedicated IEEE 1284-B compliant bi-directional parallel port (both ports cannot be used concurrently) Cables - 2-meter parallel cable, C2950A - 3-meter parallel cable, C2951A - USB cable, C6518A CPC ************** II. SOFTWARE ************** The software included with this product is as follows: - PCL 6 driver - PCL 5c driver - PS driver - Printer Status and Alerts - Toolbox ******************* III. INSTALLATION ******************* INSTALLATION OVERVIEW Hewlett-Packard recommends that you install the printer software before connecting the printer to your computer with a parallel or USB cable. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Windows XP If the New Hardware Found message is on your computer screen, and you have not installed the printer software then insert the software CD, browse and select the 2000XP directory, select Next, and follow the instructions. Windows 2000 and Windows XP When installing the printer using Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating System with a USB cable, you must find the .INF file in order to launch the installer. To find the .INF file: browse the CD and select the 2000XP directory, select Next, and follow the instructions. INSTALLATION OPTIONS JAVA Runtime Environment During installation of the software on Windows 98, NT, and 2000, the Java Runtime Environment(JRE) V1.3 or higher is installed, and disables any other version of JRE that was previously installed. A warning does not appear before the previous JRE is overwritten. For optimal use of the Toolbox, the printer's version of JRE must be used. If a different version of JRE needs to be used for another application, use the Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the JRE version installed by the HP installer. Select Start, Settings, Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs. Some HP Toolbox functionality may be lost with an earlier version of JRE. Information about the latest version of JRE is available at the following Web site: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/ REMOVING PRINTING SOFTWARE COMPONENTS If you wish to remove printing software components (such as HP Printer Status and Alerts or the HP Toolbox), follow these instructions: Select Start, Programs, hp Color LaserJet 2500 group, Uninstall, and then follow the instructions and select those components that you wish to remove. ************************** IV. HP TOOLBOX FUNCTIONS ************************** The HP Toolbox is available for Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. The HP Toolbox contains the following functions: - The embedded web server to change printer default settings - User documentation for the Color LaserJet 2500 series - Troubleshooting assistance, control panel help, printer animations - Other helpful external web links The HP Toolbox is not available for the following operating systems: - Windows 3.1x - Windows 95 - DOS - Linux - UNIX - Macintosh - OS/2 For these operating systems, copy the PRN files located in the CD-ROM directory, "PRNFILES", to your local computer to assist in printer troubleshooting. To copy these files to the Color LaserJet 2500 printer from an MS-DOS® command prompt type: "Copy filename.prn lpt1" 1. Copy the CLEANI_~1.PRN file to the printer when random specks appear on the front or back of printed output. Place the printout face down in tray 1, then copy CLEAN_~1.PRN to the printer to finish this procedure. 2. View the pjlreadme.txt file for instructions on setting the symbol set. To view this file, open it in Wordpad, or type "edit pjlrea~1.txt" from the directory where the file is located. To change the printer's symbol set to PC864ARA, copy ARABIC~1.PJL to the printer. 3. Print a cartridge page by copying the PRINT_~1.PRN to the printer to determine whether a print cartridge or imaging drum is causing print quality issues. 4. Copy demo_p~1.prn or demo_p~2.prn to the printer for an example of color output. ***************** V. KNOWN ISSUES ***************** SPECIAL CHARACTERS IN USER LOGON NAME FOR WINDOWS 2000 AND WINDOWS XP CAUSES INSTALLER TO STOP Description When installing the printing system in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the user logon name must not have special characters (for example, any letter with a cedilla; acute, circumflex, or grave accent; diaeresis; or tilde). If the user logon name contains one of these characters, the installer stops and the status bar will freeze at about 99%. This problem is not encountered when using the Add Printer Wizard to install your print driver, or when using the English character set (uppercase and lowercase forms of a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z, or the numerals 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9). Workaround 1. When using the Setup program to install your printing system, avoid the use of special characters. 2. Instead of using HP installer, use the Add Printer Wizard to install your print driver. If this is not possible or desirable, set the TEMP environment variable to C:\TEMP. LINK TO THE UNINSTALLED USER GUIDE REMAINS IN THE HP TOOLBOX Description The online User Guide is installed with a Typical Installation. If you uninstall the User Guide, the link to the User Guide will remain in the HP Toolbox. If you click the link an error message appears. Workaround The User Guide is available from the CD-ROM in the Manuals folder under your language selection. NOVELL NDPS Description The HP Toolbox is not available for Novell Network Administrator NDPS environments. Workaround 1 Manually install the HP LaserJet 2500 printer using the standard Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0 Add Printer wizard. To use the wizard, select Start, Settings, Printers, and then Add Printer. Workaround 2 Manually add the printer to the workstation using the Novell Printer Manager utility. Launch NWPMW32.EXE from the Public/Win32 directory of the NetWare5 server. Select Printer, New, Add, and add the desired printer. PRINTER STATUS AND ALERTS Description If the printer was installed using a Typical Installation, the Printer Status and Alerts default settings are used for all levels of alerts. Workaround To change the level of alerts you receive from your printer: Double click the Printer Status and Alerts icon in your systray, select Options, and select or deselect the alerts you wish to receive. A4 PRINT JOB IS RESIZED TO LETTER SIZE Description: If the A4/Letter override feature is enabled in the application, and an A4 size document is sent to the printer, the document is scaled to fit on Letter size. Workaround: When using Micorsoft Word's "Allow A4/Letter resizing" feature, set the Page Setup paper size to the desired paper output size. You must also deselect "Allow A4/Letter resizing" in the application. AUTOMATIC UPDATE STOPS WORKING AFTER BIDIRECTIONAL COMMUNICATION SUPPORT IS DISABLED Description: The Automatic Update button from the Driver Properties Configure tab is enabled after Bidirectional Communication has been disabled, but if Update Now is selected, an error message appears. Workaround: None - this is as designed. Updating is possible only when bidirectional communication is enabled. BI-DIRECTIONAL COMMUNICATION IS NOT AVAILABLE WHEN USING AN HP JETDIRECT 175 or 310 EXTERNAL PRINT SERVER THROUGH THE USB PORT Description: The printer's embedded Web server and HP Printer Status and Alerts will not be available, and it is possible you will not be able to print. Workaround: The firmware version listed on the HP Jetdirect page must be 2209 or higher. If you are using any previous version of firmware the port mode on the HP Jetdirect external print server must be set to unidirectional. Bi-directional communication will still not exist, but you should be able to print. HP recommends using the HP Jetdirect 615n print server. "LIGHTEST" WATERMARK SETTING DOES NOT APPEAR IN PRINT WHEN USING PCL DRIVERS Description: When the "Lightest" setting of the watermark is selected in the PCL driver, the watermark does not print. Workaround: Use the "Very Light" setting. PCL6 DRIVER QUICKSETS DO NOT STORE ALL WATERMARK INFORMATION Description: Changes to watermarks (angle, font, shading, and font size) are not stored with quicksets, and when the quickset is used again the watermark will not appear. Workaround: Do not save watermark settings with a quickset. Instead, save watermarks using the Watermarks group box on the Effects tab. "SEVERE ERROR" MESSAGE APPEARS DURING CUSTOMIZATION UTILITY INSTALLATION Description: During installation using the Customization Utility, the following error message is received: "Installer has encountered a severe error, cannot continue. Restart the computer and try again." This occurs when using the Customization Utility to create a printing system for a language or OS different from the creator's PC. Workaround: Verify if there is an existing image on the network drive, and if so, delete that image before continuing. Use the same language for the system being built as is configured for the computer. VERTICAL CHARACTERS ARE NOT PRINTED USING WINDOWS 2000 OR WINDOWS XP Description: When using the PostScript driver with the Windows 2000 or the Windows XP operating system, and printing vertical 2-byte characters, no vertical characters are printed. This can occur with any 2-byte language. Workaround: 1. Reset the TrueType Font Download Option by Going to Advanced Options, opening PostScript Options, selecting TrueType Font Download Option, and change from AUTOMATIC to OUTLINE 2. A language level 2 driver PPD is included for English, EuroEnglish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Use the Add Printer Wizard to install this driver. The PPD is located in the euroengl directory. This driver is placed in a separate directory 'XYZ' created under the 'PS' directory. The driver is still PScript 5.2, but it uses PostScript language level 2 with PS version 2014.107. *************************** VI.
